.Adult learners often face multitude of barriersto their academic achievement. successful adult literacy program is aware of those barriersand works with learners to overcome them. Chicago's De La Salle Institute/Tolton Center empowers poverty-level adults through academicachievement. Their strategy recognizes that breaking the illiteracy cycle must begin with theadult who is the center of the family and community structure. The center's mission is to pro-vide excellent alternative adult education experiences within caring community where "every-one teaches and everyone learns."
