- In this issue of the Illinois Literacy newsletter you will read about how being laid off was the best thing that ever happened to one man because then he had to learn to read, and how a young woman with four young children managed to go back to school to learn to read. Also, Secretary of State Jesse White awarded more than $6 million in grants to 167 local literacy projects in Illinois. Grants included those for Adult/Volunteer Literacy programs, Family Literacy projects and Workplace Skills Enhancement programs. Plus, a student makes literacy her senior project, and libraries partner with literacy programs. On behalf of Secretary of State Jesse White, Illinois State Library Director Anne Craig, along with Illinois Press Association (IPA) Executive Director David Bennett, presented awards to 10 outstanding adult literacy students and 10 volunteer tutors at the Spotlight on Achievement and Service Awards.
