JUSTICE KARMEIER delivered the judgment of the court, with opinion. Chief Justice Thomas and Justices Freeman, Fitzgerald, Kilbride, Garman, and Burke concurred in the judgment and opinion. Cook County jury convicted this defendant in the 1998 shooting death of 16-year-old that occurred near the Lathrop Homes housing complex. The prosecution claimed that the homicide was gang-related and that the defendant acted as leader. The circuit court judge imposed an extended-term sentence of years for the murder, and the appellate court affirmed. On appeal, the defendant complained of the trial judge's denial of one of his peremptory challenges to prospective female juror.
