.Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority Summer 2006 The extent and nature of elder abuse in Illinois (Continued on page 4) By Michelle Repp PUBLICATIONS RESEARCH GRANTS TECHNOLOGY Illinois enjoyed statewide multiyear drop in crime, reports of elderabuse increased at an alarming rate between state fiscal years 1994 and 2004, according to an analysis of elder abuse data obtained from the IllinoisDepartment on Aging. The Elder Abuse and Neglect Program under the direction of the Department onAging was established in 1988 to respond to reports of alleged elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation committed against citizens ages years and older, and to work "B reak the silence. Report elder abuse," urges billboard on Route 13, main highway justoutside far southern Carterville. Residents of this mostly rural area have beendoing just that, reporting cases of abuse at rate that makes the area number onein the state.
