Scott Phone: (217) 333-4966 Soil moisture conditions in Illinois at the end of January were normal to slightly below normal near the surface, but showed increasing wetness in deeper layers. Precipitation in January was above average across Illinois , except in northwestern areas. As result, soil moisture conditions across the state were normal to slightly below normal near the surface and normal to slightly above normal with depth (Figure 1). Values ranged from percent of normal at Belleville to percent at Olney in the 0- to 6-inch layer, from percent at Topeka to percent at Olney in the 6- to 20-inch layer, and from percent at Bondville to percent at Rend Lake in the 20- to 40-inch layer. Amounts in the 40- to 72-inch layer were more variable, ranging from percent at Dixon Springs to percent at Rend Lake. Overall soil moisture in Illinois at the end of January was near normal (Figure 2). Compared to conditions at the end of December,
