Description

The Illinois State Board of Education submits this report in fulfillment of the requirements of HR 250 of the 92nd General Assembly. This report is the strategic plan required for the State of Illinois to assist school districts in responding to the need for recruiting and retaining high-quality teachers in all geographic regions of the state and throughout all subject areas.

The future health and even the survival of our democracy depend on having populace that can make good decisions, solve problems and actively particpate in the community and the life of the nation. Without sufficient workforce of highly qualified educators, our nation's future is in peril. Statistics defining the problem paint frightening picture. Only 3% of Illinois' 11th graders are "fairly certain" they would like to teach as career. But nearly 50% of Illinois' 155,000 teachers are eligible to retire within the next five years.
