Annual Report for Active IDOT Wetland Compensation and Hydrologic Monitoring Sites {periodical start}
Annual report by the Illinois State Geological Survey to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Hydrologic data was collected from wetland compensation sites and potential wetland compensation sites being monitored under contract. Where appropriate, the report also includes a determination of areas meeting wetland hydrology criteria listed in the 1987 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual and its online updates.

Summaries of 23 sites are included in this report.

Black Crowned Night-Herons of the Lake Calumet Region, Chicago, Illinois (37 2005, 3-4 August)
Irregularly published technical series. This volume consists of two issues: 37 3 , entitled "Nesting Ecology of Black-crowned Night-Herons at Lake Calumet Wetlands" and 37 4 , entitled "Population Trends in a Black-crowned Night-Heron Colony at Lake Calumet Wetlands" Volume 37 3 Partial Abstract: We examined the nesting ecology of a Blackcrowned Night-Heron Nycticorax nycticorax colony located at wetlands associated with Lake Calumet in south Cook County, Illinois,during the 2002 and 2003 nesting seasons. This area of southeastern Chicago has been greatly impacted by heavy industry, solid and chemical waste disposal, urbanization, and altered hydrology. Volume 37 4 Abstract: The number of active Black-crowned Night-Heron Nycticorax nycticorax nesting colonies in Illinois has declined significantly over the past century. Habitat loss/degradation and other factors such as exposure to environmental contaminants and competition for nest sites at established colonies may have contributed to this decline. In this study, we examined recent trends in population levels of Black-crowned Night-Herons nesting at wetlands associated with Lake Calumet in southeastern Chicago, Illinois. The number of Black-crowned Night-Herons nesting annually at these wetlands has fluctuated widely over the last two decades. Immigration of herons from riverine colonies may have driven population increases during the mid-1980s and early 1990s. However, this population has remained relatively stable at between 300 and 400 pairs during 19972003.

Environmental Education Resources for Teachers
Environmental education covers a broad range of topics from recycling and pollution to natural resources and wildlife. Environmental education programs target all ages from preschool children to graduate students. This guide focuses on resources for teaching K-12 students about the environmental effects of pollution and waste and strategies for improving the environment. It also includes some industrial chemistry resources. This reference guide includes links to classroom activities, background and policy information, standards, and reference sources that teachers can use to develop their own environmental education lesson plans. Because the scope of the topic is so broad, this is not meant to be an exhaustive list. Rather, it is designed to give you some places to start looking for resources. Information to help you continue your research at your local library is included at the end of the guide.

Green Creek Potential Wetland Compensation Site: Level II Hydrogeologic Characterization Report [OFS 2006-3]
This report describes a hydrogeologic investigation of the Green Creek property near Effingham, Illinois, to determine suitability for wetland compensation.

Guide to the Geology of Moraine Hills, Glacial Park, and Volo Bog Areas, McHenry and Lake Counties, Illinois (2007-A) [Field Trip Guidebook]
This guide presents the geological framework, depositional history, structural setting, geomorphology, and natural resources of this area in northeastern Illinois. The guide to the route and stop descriptions include geological, historical, and cultural information.

Hydrogeologic characterization of the former fish farm at Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve, Du Page County, Illinois [OFS 2009-1]
Report describes the study to characterize the hydrogeologic conditions at a portion of Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve, near the Village of Lemont, in Du Page County. Emerald Fen, a seep-fed wetland located near the southwest corner of the preserve, is a documented larval habitat for the federally-endangered Hine's emerald dragonfly. The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority is exploring the possibility of expanding the dragonfly habitat at a former fish farm at the southwest corner of the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve.
