2002 Illinois Light Goose Conservation Action Survey Report (2002)
Harvest of light geese during the 2002 Illinois Conservation Action was estimated at 17,875 geese, a decrease or 18,955 geese from the 2001 harvest of 36,830. Participation increased to 5,107 hunters during 2002 compared to 4,665 hunters during 2001. Hunters spent an estimated 31,204 days afield during 2002, a decrease of 1,430 from the 32,634 days hunted during 2001. Unplugged shotguns were the method used most often (67%); however electronic calls and hunting after sunset were also used by more than 50% of hunters (62% and 54%, respectively). As with hunters responding to the 2001 survey, hunters who did not participate in the conservation action reported no geese in the area and no place to hunt as well as not interested as the main reasons they did not hunt light geese.
Black Crowned Night-Herons of the Lake Calumet Region, Chicago, Illinois (37 2005, 3-4 August)
Irregularly published technical series. This volume consists of two issues: 37 3 , entitled "Nesting Ecology of Black-crowned Night-Herons at Lake Calumet Wetlands" and 37 4 , entitled "Population Trends in a Black-crowned Night-Heron Colony at Lake Calumet Wetlands" Volume 37 3 Partial Abstract: We examined the nesting ecology of a Blackcrowned Night-Heron Nycticorax nycticorax colony located at wetlands associated with Lake Calumet in south Cook County, Illinois, during the 2002 and 2003 nesting seasons. This area of southeastern Chicago has been greatly impacted by heavy industry, solid and chemical waste disposal, urbanization, and altered hydrology. Volume 37 4 Abstract: The number of active Black-crowned Night-Heron Nycticorax nycticorax nesting colonies in Illinois has declined significantly over the past century. Habitat loss/degradation and other factors such as exposure to environmental contaminants and competition for nest sites at established colonies may have contributed to this decline. In this study, we examined recent trends in population levels of Black-crowned Night-Herons nesting at wetlands associated with Lake Calumet in southeastern Chicago, Illinois. The number of Black-crowned Night-Herons nesting annually at these wetlands has fluctuated widely over the last two decades. Immigration of herons from riverine colonies may have driven population increases during the mid-1980s and early 1990s. However, this population has remained relatively stable at between 300 and 400 pairs during 19972003.

Illinois Light Goose Conservation Order Hunter Survey Report (2004, October 19) [HR-04-04]
An estimated 37,189 snow geese were harvested during the Light Goose Conservation Order season in Illinois in 2004. This harvest is 22% greater than the estimated 30,564 snow geese harvested in 2003. Participation in the Light Goose Conservation Order season increased from 3,111 hunters in 2003 to 5,976 hunters in 2004, a 92% increase. Similarly, the days spent afield by snow goose hunters increased 63%, from 27,177 days to 44,306 days. Sixty-three percent of the 2004 snow goose harvest occurred in the South Waterfowl Zone during February. Of the specialized methods afforded snow goose hunters, unplugged shotgun was the most often used, being employed by 67% of hunters. Electronic calls and hunting after sunset were utilized by 62% and 60% of the hunters, respectively.
